| It is
always best to use acid-free materials and reversible mounting
techniques when framing or reframing family heirlooms.
The
first step in preserving family heirlooms is to determine
the condition of the object. This is best done in our shop
or in the lab of a conservator. If the pieces in question
are already in frames, keep them intact and bring them to
our shop. Removing art from frames can be risky.
Consider a family's collection of diplomas, christening gowns or uniforms, family photographs and portraits, historic documents
and works of art. Preserving these old and valuable objects
with archival framing solutions is the objective.
We will reuse the original frame and glazing if desired and if possible, replacing only those materials that are acidic or otherwise
damaging to the heirloom (see ARCHIVAL
MOUNTING METHODS and CREDO).
Finally, specialty mats are often used to give the newly framed heirloom the softened appeal of the original antique (see FRENCH
MATS).
For
the display of heirlooms and art, we also build hall tables,
pedestals and vitrines (see PAINTED
FINISHES & FURNITURE).
Many old heirlooms are in need of treatment
by a conservator. We can make introductions to conservators,
or we can put our customer in touch with the AIC (American
Institute for Conservation). |
